Why did Google launch Adsense?

Google, like any company, wants to make money. That said, the company was smart to create a process that creates relevant ads. Its good news for advertisers (why would advertisers want to spend money and not reach their demographic?). Google allows advertisers to hit their target demographic. Also, irrelevant keywords / ads are removed (or at least, paused) by Google if the click through rate (CTR) is less that 0.5%. This helps to clear the web of garbage ads.
